Raising the Foal for Optimal Future Performance

Raising a foal for optimal value at foal auctions or future athletic performance is a complex undertaking that is riddled with obstacles and inherent risks. In this workshop, experts and delegates participants will explore together the genetic, epigenetic, nutritional, parasite, and other risk factors and how to deal with them.

This workshop will offer the perfect forum to discuss the latest insights into the best choice of broodmare and ET recipient, environmental factors that affect pregnancy outcome, foal size, and performance, anthelmintic strategies in mares and foals, weaning procedures, exercise protocols, and many more. This workshop is aimed at veterinarians who frequently advise horse breeders, large broodmare farms, and breeding organizations on how to optimize the equine breeding industry.

Topics included:

  • Epigenetics in horses, the actual impact on the foal
  • Effect of environmental factors
  • Age and parity in broodmares: how and why does it matter?
  • Gametes, embryos, and their epigenome: Considerations when using IVP in equine reproduction
  • Medical risk factors in the growing foal
  • Anthelmintic strategies for the pregnant mare and the nursing foal
  • How to deal with anthelmintic resistance on the broodmare farm
  • Incidence of disease, injury and mortality in Thoroughbred foals and yearlings on stud farms in the United Kingdom and Ireland
  • How to reduce risk of injury through adequate daily management of mare and foal
  • Primary vaccination in foals: what is the adequate age, what is the adequate protocol?

Participants in this workshop can purchase access to the video recordings of all other pre-symposium workshops (except the ET and Semen Handling courses).
