Semen Collection and Handling

The Equine Semen Handling course is a one-day, pre-symposium course consisting of lectures, practical exercises and demonstrations on all aspects of semen collection, handling of cooled and frozen, semen, transport and cryopreservation. This course will take place on Wednesday October 9, 2024 at the ERC De Morette in Asse, Belgium.

This course is designed for veterinarians with prior knowledge and clinical skills in stallion and semen management. The course will provide new insights and help participants to optimize and increase efficiency of semen collection, management and transport of cooled semen as well as the handling, shipping and storing frozen semen. The laboratory session will provide hands-on opportunities for semen evaluation, semen preparation for cooled storage, cryopreservation, and shipment of semen. Additional time will be dedicated to cryopreservation of epididymal sperm following sudden death or castration. The course is limited to 12 veterinarians.

  • Semen evaluation

  • Equipment required for handling and storing frozen semen
  • Thawing, assessment and insemination techniques for frozen semen
  • Shipping frozen semen
  • How to handle frozen semen brought in by clients
  • What to look out for should there be a problem with a straw
  • How to maintain your nitrogen tanks correctly & safely
  • Handling and safety working with liquid nitrogen
  • Paper work and health papers explained
  • Common problems and troubleshooting

The Equine Semen Handling course is organized in collaboration with the Equine Reproduction Center ERC De Morette, the Schockemohle Stud and Stallion AI Services, three of the leading stallion centres in Europe.

Participants in this course can purchase access to the video recordings of all other pre-symposium workshops (except the ET and Semen Handling courses). Venue

The lectures and wet labs will take place at the ERC De Morette in Asse (between Ghent and Brussels). Transport from the city-centre of Ghent to ERC De Morette, and back, is included in the registration fee. For those of you arriving in Belgium on Tuesday 8 October, we recommend that you book a hotel (see Venue for recommended hotels) in Ghent and use the free shuttle from Ghent to ERC De Morette.

Date

9 October 2024. Transport from downtown Ghent to De Morette will depart at 8:00. Lectures start at 9:00 at ERC De Morette. Transport from ERC De Morette back to Ghent is scheduled to arrive in Ghent by 18:30.

Registration

The course is limited to 12 participants (strict full-is-full policy). Registration fee includes coffee breaks, lunch, and transport from Ghent to ERC De Morette and back. Participants to the course can purchase the video recordings of all pre-symposium workshops (except the ET and Semen Handling courses) for online viewing during three months after the symposium. Participants must be registered for the ESER 2024 Symposium to be able to register for this course.
